Dan Scoones (Port Coquitlam, BC, Canada) writes: “Despite the caption in Chess Life & Review, I believe that the photograph was taken not during the Herceg Novi blitz tournament but in the second round of the USSR v the Rest of the World match in Belgrade. The Belgrade game began 1 c4 g6 2 Nc3 c5, which corresponds to the position in the photograph, whereas the Herceg Novi game opened 1 c4 Nf6 2 Nc3 g6. Moreover, the design of the players’ chairs is consistent with the ones used in Belgrade, and in all the Herceg Novi photographs that I have seen there were white tablecloths. Finally, the shade of Fischer’s jacket matches other Belgrade photographs, but not pictures taken in Herceg Novi.”
“Bobby Fischer returned to the international arena in 1970, competing in the USSR vs Rest of the World match in Belgrade, Yugoslavia. On that occasion Bobby accepted to play in the second board yielding the honor of the first one to GM Larsen (that can be seen standing, in the center of the image, observing the board of the game Fischer vs Petrosian). Whoever looks at the board, to the left of the photo, seems to be GM and pianist Mark Taimanov (but I'm not sure). GM Portisch appears standing to the right of the photo, behind Petrosian's back. If memory does not fail me, Bobby defeated the Armenian GM by 3 to 1.

“This book also includes several photographs, a considerable amount of commentary on the various tournaments and matches and, for the first time in this series, fifty of the games are annotated. The British Chess Magazine for March 1972, page 101, states that the annotations are mostly from Russian sources although this is not clear from the book itself.”
